Onboarding process

Questions about the onboarding process and your options

Do I need an Apple and Google developer account to use Smartix? +

No. Unlike many of our competitors, Smartix does not require you to have your own developer accounts or bring your own wallet pass signing credentials.

Everything you need is provided by Smartix. That said, if you do have your own developer accounts you can bring your own credentials if you wish.

Can I use Smartix wallet signing credentials for an evaluation then switch to our own credentials later? +

Yes you can. We strongly recommend that you take this option as we can onboard you can get you up and running far more quickly and easily.

The one caveat is that any templates and passes that you create will be tied to our credentials, so we will need to delete everything
before we can switch you over. So, bear that in mind and contact us to arrange the switch before you create
templates or passes that you wish to keep beyond your evaluation process.

What is the benefit of having our own Apple and Google credentials? +

For Apple, there is little diffference. All pass data is held within the Smartix system. The only thing held by Appple will be your Pass Type ID and signing certificates. You can update update certificates at any time (and request that Apple revoke any old certificates).

With Google it is a little different, your pass templates (Class files) and generated passes will reside in your Google account instead of ours. However, your source template designs and pass data still reside in the Smartix system.

In theory, opting for your own credentials gives you a possible migration option away from Smartix since you can rertain your Google classes/passes and your Apple Pass Type ID and certificates. However, such a migration is non-trivial and would involve copying all Smartix data to give you want you would need for a custom import into some other system.

The real difference might be in terms of your contractual need to maintain maximum ownership due to your contract with your customers.

Feel free to get in touch to discuss this further if you are unsure which you shoudl choose.

Pricing

Smartix pricing options explained

Can I really do a full evaluation for free? +

Of course you can!

Firstly we do not charge for issuing, updating (patching), or notifying TEST passes. TEST passes differ only in that they expire ofter 48 hours, whereas LIVE passes can be open eneded or expire at a date you choose. Using tets passes you can test every aspect of Smartix with incurring any cost.

Additinally, all clients receive 100 credit free each month. You can use these to issue soem LIVE passes for extended testing. Privided you stay uinder 100 credits used each month there wil be no cost to you.

Can I really run a business program for free? +

Yes you can!

Your 100 free credits can be used for any purpose including commerical use. When Smartix was founded we were aware that wallet passes were out of the reach of small businesses and organisations. We were (and remain) determined to provide a low cost - and in many cases, free - option.

We intend for small home businesses to be able to use Smartix for free indefinitely - within a limited, but usable free tier. As you grow and see more benefits from Smartix you may find that the free credits are insufficient and you may need to top-up with soem paid crrdits.

You can stretch your credit futher by being selective about which pass holders you send notificatons to, or by spreading updates over two months (half at the end of one months, and half at the start of the next) so you are using two months' worth of free credits.

If you represent a non-profit organisation and need a few more credits please get in touch. We may be able to allocate you extra free credits.

What are credits? +

All actions within Smartix have a credit cost. In some case this will be one or more credits, in other cases this might be zero credits (free).

See the pricing page for nore details.

Do credits expire? +

Pre-paid credits never expire. Free credits expire a the end of your billing period (monthly from your onboarding date) but if you are eligible you will recieve a new free credit allocation for the next month.

If you are on a monthly contract, then credits are paid for after you use them so expiry is not reallt relevant anyway.

What's the difference between pay-as-you-go and contract pricing? +

All users being with PAYG. With PAYG you pre-purchsase credit bundles. Credit are then used up as you issue, update and notify passes. There is no commitment for any further credit purchases.

Our monthly contrcat options are available upon request only. With a monthly contract you commit to a minimum spend each month and a noticed period to quit. In exchange you get lower credit costs and we invoice you at the end of each month and take payment by direct debit 7 days later.

Since we are supplying a service to you on credit, we may carry out a credit check before approving your monthly contract.

Who gets free credits? +

All PAYG customers receive a free credit allocations (usually 100 credits) each month. Monthly contract customers do not havwe a free allocation.

What are free engagement credits? +

Some pass types include free engagement credits as part of the issue cost.

What this means is that when you engage with the pass holder via a pass update or a notificiation, your first are free. Only when you use up the free engagement credits for each pass will you start to use your normL credits.

These are completely separate to paid or free credits and do not expire.

Make sure you use your free engagement credits to get th emost our of your Smartix passes!

What if I run out of credits? +

Firstly, if you are on our monthly plan then you cannot run out of credits...§

If you are on our PAYG plan then you could run out. We will let you know via email when your free / paid credits are running low so you can top up.

If you have purchaed a credit bundle then you will have a small overdraft allowance to give you some breathing room.

You can setup auto top-up if you wish. This will automatically purchae a new buindle when you run low. You will also benefit from discounted bundle pricing for auto top-ups.

If you allow your balance to reach zero and use up your overdraft then you will be unable to issue new passes or carry out engagements (update or notify passes). This includes interacting with our managed passes via the Scan App or shopify plugin.

Do you offer customer enterprise pricing? +

Yes we do. Our month;y contract prices will generally suit most customers, but we are aware that they might require some adjustment to remian competitive for unusual or especially large use-cases.

Please rech out to us if you wish to discuss bespoke pricing.

Is there any additional costs associated with using the API or any of your intergrations or Scan App? +

Smartix does not charge any additional fees for any of our integrations or Scan App. Your only fees will be your credit cost for your pass actions.

Shopify : Shopify do not charge any fees for using the Smartix plugin app

Zapier : Whilst Zapier does have a free tier, they limit you to 2 staep Zaps (trigger and action). We have found this to be too limiting, so a paid Zapier account will probably be necessary.

Smartix Pass Types

Questions about the various pass types that Smartix offers

What is the difference between Managed and Custom passes? +

Essentially, a managed pass is one where Smartix controls the barcode content and a standard pass is one where you control what is encoded into your barcode.

In order to use our Scan app, or use our Shopify integrations (for stamp cards, loyalty cards and membership discounts) you must select a managed pass template.

If you are providing your own scanning infastructure then you will probably want a custom pass template so you can encode whatever you need into the barcode.

You can, of course, use managed passes with your own scanners (speak yo use about our barcode format), or just roll your own stamp/loyalty cards from our standard pass templates.

Can I use a template for a different purpose than the one intended? +

Absolutely!

Whilst our manages passes are reasonably well tied to their intended uses, you can do some adaptions.

Some custom passes Especially the Google versions) have some specific functionality tied to their type, as long that that does not interfere with your use case you can use them any way you wish!

You could, for exaple, create a token pass for complimentary drinks at an event using a stamp card. Disable multiple cards, set the number fo stamps to the number of tokens and just reverse the usual imagary.

So, for eample if you had 3 drinks tokens, then 0 = stamps shows 3 tokens, 1 stamp = 2 tokens left etc. When you have "collected 3 tokens" then you have used up your drinks tokens. You could do with with both our manage stamp cards and the custom ones.

If you have a use-case that you are not sure how to apply, then drop us a line. We'll be glad to help!

Can you help create custom templates with enhanced functionality? +

Yes we can. We have, for example, created UK rail ticket passes which auto-generate itinerarys on the back of the pass. Incorporating the functionality into a specialist Smartix pass means the client can reduce the complexity of theirt integration with Smartix.

If you have a special case then get in touch with us to discuss your requirements.

Do you support NFC as well as barcode scanning? +

Not yet. This is a catch-22 situation with Apple. In order to get approval from Apple to do this we need to have a client with an accepted use-case. Since we do not yet have a client that does we cannot do this.

However, if you have a use case that Apple will accept then please get in touch. If we contact Apple together we should be able to have an approved working solution in place for NFC very quickly sinc emuch of the work is already in place.
